Sparta! My Trip to see 300 (3/10/07)

300 is one of those movies that you feel has been coming out for the last two years. Especially if you are a MySpacer, you know that the advertisements have been smacking you in the Peloponesian face for months now. Thank you 300, for the ability to post 300 photos to my page. That's very generous of you. I just posted my fifth.

But anyhoo...

The movie, the third of its kind in my memory (Sky Captain and Sin City being the first two) is quite good in a "gee I wish there were more Lord of the Rings-like movies out there" sort of way. There are many parallels to Lord of the Rings, including a Gollum like creature and a horde of Clumsy Olyphants. But this flick exists mostly to light men's pectorials and women's breasts in fasinating new ways.

I remember a sketch on Saturday Night Live about 15 years ago where a strange race of alien women arrive on earth. They have eyes on their breasts and as a result receive unprecedented cooperation from the men of earth. Because of the perfect chests in 300, this theory may explain why I found the movie so captivating. Any argument a character makes is perfectly sensible...

But what I liked the most I think was the ending...which was happy and sad all at the same time. On the one hand, everyone dies. Arrows fall from the sky and the three hundred meet their end. Xerxes is too powerful of a villian, and for now the death star remains in tact. But ultimately 300 is a study into the psyche of war and why we as a people go there. Injustice and evil will ultimately stumble when a few brave men dare to take a crack at it.

Xerxes, nice though his chest may be, is just a powerful man who can ultimately be defeated. That the 300couldn't get the job done may mean more Frank Miller inspired chesty fun for us all.
