Dean Karnazes: You are not my hero...yet. (1/22/07)

The name Dean Karnazes has been tossed around here and there for the past few years. If you are a runner odds are that you have seen the name in various issues of Runners World, if only at the top of the results listings in the back pages. He might just be one of the fittest individuals on the planet. A complete stud in the Running community. Not just an ultra marathoner, but a damn good one at that.

So why did I decide to write about Dean instead of add him to my heroes section? Well, for me Dean is one of those momentary heroes. Someone who I think is cool today, but who's coolness factor could slide at any moment. I guess that you really have to acheive something special to make your way into that category, and for now Dean is not there yet.

But let's talk about what Dean has acheived. 50 marathons in 50 days in each of the fifty states. For a runner this is like climbing the 14 summits sans oxygen. It is an elite group, and Dean is at the top.

Did I mention that he is 44 and didn't start running until the age of 30. He's a late bloomer. I like late bloomers. They make me think that there is hope for guys like me.

And the coolest thing of all? Dean knows how to urinate while he runs! When time is of the essence, you have to take care of business without slowing down for a break. Oh and he crazy glues the blisters on his feet too.

Way to go Dean! You're not my hero yet, but you are on your way.
