Breakfast (04/08/2009)

If there is one thing that we humans like to do more than just about anything (yes, even Es-Ee-Ex), it's eat. When it comes to food, I have been a bit of a martyr, but I too love to eat. I'll admit it, I own a Rachel Ray cookbook. Over the years, I have learned to cook because I love to eat. And both-- eating AND cooking-- are arts.

That's why I have decided to devote a series of blogs to each of the three food groups: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Today, we focus on Breakfast, because first, it comes first, and second, this is a blog, not a Quentin Tarantino movie.

I will admit that breakfast has not always been my favorite meal of the day. For years I shied away from it, namely because sleep was far more important than eating. In high school I knew that I could steal a pack of my dad's Carnation instant breakfast, and as an adult, Coffee, though devoid of any nutritional value, was good enough to get me through to lunch, which was in my opinion, the real "most important" meal of the day.

At some point however, I realized that there really are things to enjoy about breakfast. And I'm not just talking about pop-tarts.

"Breakfast is back."

This is the slogan Kellogg's Raisin Bran Crunch rolled out about ten years ago when it first came on the market. Where did breakfast go? I have no idea. Considering that this was around the same time that Denny's unsuccessfully launched their "30 Minutes or it's Free" campaign, I suspect that most people wandered away from this meal sometime in the late 80's or early 90's. I can't say if Raisin Bran Crunch was a good enough reason to come back to breakfast (though it is good, once you remove the squirrel poop), but cereal is as good enough a place to start.

Cereal of course, is about as perfect as it gets when it comes to breakfast. All you need is a box (or bag, depending on your economic status) and a carton of milk and you are ready to go. There are many good breakfast cereals out there, including Corn Pops, Grape Nuts, and Life. My personal favorite, and I just discovered this recently is Blueberry Crunch. It's made by Safeway, and is sort of like Golden Grahams but with blueberries mixed in.

It is amazing!

Like any meal though, you really can't go wrong with meat, and breakfast offers some of the best meats money can buy. I recommend that everyone keep a can of Corned Beef Hash in their cupboard for special occasions. Of course, every day is a special occasion if you have a can of Corned Beef Hash in your cupboard.

Other good breakfast meats include Bacon, Sausage and Chorizo.

Breakfast Burritos have become a staple for a people on the run. As long as you have tortillas in the house, you can mix your favorite breakfast items together before you hit the road. My favorite breakfast burrito contains eggs, country gravy, sausage, and tater tots.

I got the recipe from Taco Bell, and why they discontinued this menu item is beyond me. It was fantastic.

Carnation Instant Breakfast is still good (albeit a much more expensive version of Ovaltine if you ask me), but my tastes in regards to breakfast have come a long way over the years. Many days I am even up early enough to enjoy this amazing meal.

When it comes down to it though, I would rather just have a cup of coffee (or three).

Maybe that's because I just saw how Scrapple is made. Scrapple is a popular meat dish in the South, and is similar to Spam. People just love it.

Take a look:

Yeah.

Breakfast is back.

I'm going back to sleep. Wake me for lunch.
